Tarantula hill is one of several low hills near the central area of Thousand Oaks, behind the Oaks Mall, near Lynn Road and Gainsborough Road. You can see a historic photo on our Local History Photo site. Tarantula hill is owned by COSCA.
Why tarantula? The hill is named for the California tarantulas that can be found in the area, but are more common along the open areas along the Salto and Wildwood Park. They are shy and seldom seen, and tend to be a little smaller than some other tarantulas, including the non-native tarantulas kept as pets.
