While we can't recommend specific products, Libby works well on a variety of devices, including smartphones and tablets (iOS and Android), Amazon Fire tablets, computers via a web browser at libbyapp.com, and through integrations with e-readers and car systems like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

You can also send books to a Kindle devices for reading.

It has been reported by some that the easiest devices for using Libby are Kobo e-readers and Android e-readers, as they offer the most seamless integration with the Libby app. Equally simple are iPads and iPad minis.  Users may want to choose a tablet or dedicated reader that has an operating system they are used to.  So, if you're very familiar with your iPhone, an iPad will probably be the easiest for you to learn, and will integrate with devices you already own. If you have an Android phone, an Android tablet will probably be easier for you to learn.

  • Kobo e-readers: Kobo has the most direct integration, allowing you to browse, borrow, and return books directly from the device itself.
  • Android e-readers (e.g., Onyx Boox): Because these devices run Android, you can install the Libby app directly and have access to all features, including audiobooks and magazines.

For a Kindle (requires extra steps)

  • Using a Kindle: You can use Libby on a Kindle, but it's not as seamless as on a Kobo or Android device.  You must have an Amazon account to use the Kindle. When giving a Kindle as a gift, you may want to make sure the recipient has an Amazon account.
  • How it works: You'll use the Libby app on your phone or tablet to borrow books, and then you can send them to your Kindle device. This process is limited to users in the United States.
  • Note: Some genres, like magazines and comics, are not available in Kindle format.  Some users really like the e-ink Kindles due to the lack of glare from the screen and light weight of the device.

Other options

  • Tablets: A standard tablet (like an iPad or Android tablet) is also easy to use since you can simply download the Libby app. This is a good option for color content like magazines and comics.

Operating systems requirements

  • iOS: iPhones and iPads running iOS 10+
  • Android: Phones and tablets running Android 5.0+
  • Amazon Fire: Newer Fire tablets with Fire OS 5+

Computers

Other devices and services

  • Web browser: You can use Libby on any computer with a web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, or Silk) by visiting libbyapp.com.
    • Windows/Mac/Chromebook: While there isn't a dedicated desktop app, you can use the web browser version.
    • Kindle: For U.S. libraries, you can send books to your Kindle device.
    • E-readers: Some e-readers, like Kobo, have built-in OverDrive/Libby access.
    • Cars: You can listen to audiobooks in your car with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
    • Smart speakers: You can stream audiobooks from your phone to a Google Home or Amazon Echo using Bluetooth.

Any ereader or tablet will need a charger and cord, which usually come with the device.  Other hardware is not needed.

Device Memory -  ebooks take up a very small amount of memory, but eaudiobooks are much larger around 300-400 mb on average, with some larger.  If you wish to use primarily eaudio and listen to your ebook, please make sure you have adequate memory on the device.
