Why can't I place a hold?

When I try to place a hold, it does not work.

or  it gives me a "see a librarian" message.

Answer

If your hold request was not accepted, you may have reached your holds limit.

Any library card can have up to 10 active holds on it at one time.  As soon as a hold moves to your "Checkouts" it frees up a space for another hold.

If you have fewer than 10 items on hold you may have reached your 50 item Checkout limit.  You will need to return some items, or contact a librarian to place additional holds.

If you can log in to "My Account" but can't place a hold, and you do not have other holds, or have overdue items or billed items, you may have an expired card. Please see our Expired Card FAQ.

If you have a temporary account, with a 7 digit account number, you will need to request that your account be converted into a permanent account.  Please use Ask-a-Librarian or call us and provide your name and the temporary account number.

If you are trying to hold a dvd, and it did not work, you may have a juvenile library card, which only allows checkout and holds on childrens dvds.  If you are no longer a minor, contact a librarian to have the status of your card updated.

If you receive a "Contact a Librarian" message, please call us at 805-449-2660, option 4 to resolve the issue between 10am-5pm M-F.  Or leave a message via Ask-a-Librarian.
